Penn Street 214-5 (P. Jupp 127, M. Bannister 50) beat Hambleden 112-8 (M. Bannister 3-4, C. Herriott 3-16) by 102 runs
“Actually I quite like the stinging sensation” - Peter Jupp
On a typical July day promising showers Penn Street presented with only nine players knowing they were in for a fight. Fortunately Hambleden had the same problem and so we began a match with seven fielders per side. Batting first on what the batsmen would call a “belter” and the bowlers a “road”, Juppy and Matt Bannister set the stall out with a steady opening partnership of over a hundred before Banny holed out to mid-off for his fifth consecutive fifty. Dave then fell for a second ball duck to a De Villiers style catch at cover. It was then left to Cherriott and Juppy to push on from the early foundations. Unfortunately Cherriott played on for 16 whereas Juppy ploughed on regardless falling for a chanceless 127 troubled only by jarring the bat into his testicles and then the ball into his box giving all and sundry a graphic description of the pain. A surprise top score of 16 by Goody led Penn Street to a competitive score of 214 against some steady bowling.
The second innings began with one of the greatest catches ever seen at Penn Street (compared only with Trevor Andrews at Molins or Robbo's career ending grab off Bobby Fryer) Second ball of the innings Cherriott threw down a rank long hop at snails pace this was middled at some pace about three inches off the ground to Banny's right, cue a full stretch dive and one handed catch that would have graced a Test Match. Penn Streets bowling was tidy and certainly compensated for the lack of 2 fielders as Cherriot picked up three and Banny wrapped up the tail with 3 in six balls. Special praise should also go to the two Tylers and Ryan Greenstreet who again all bowled tidily and with much spirit.
Overall a solid win for Penn Street with excellent contributions from all.
