Penn Street 125-10 (S. Martin 38, W. Smith 21; A. Masht 2-7, D. Ward 2-13, R. Greenstreet 2-14, F. McAndrew 2-16) beat Holmer Green 69-10 (P. Weerakoon 18; N. Loftus 3-14, J. Mendy 2-4, P. Goodchild 2-17 and 500 club wickets) by 56 runs
The Sunday of the May Bank Holiday inevitably means our local rivals Holmer Green at their beer fest, in a match reduced to 30 overs by the prospect of rain and beer (not necessarily in that order), although as it would fair to say that given the pitch looked somewhat underprepared, 30 overs looked a challenge for both sides.
Chris Russell opened, and looked very comfortable until one lifted off a length and he popped it back to the bowler. Will Smith looked very comfortable though, and was scoring consistently whilst losing partners at the other end. That was until Sam Martin came in. He felt that attack was the best form of defence, and started scoring freely including another massive six (Steve Exton beware !!). Eventually Penn Street were out all for 125 - surely not enough.
Ward and Masht started confidently, but then fate struck. Paul Goodchild, 498 wickets for the club, bowled straight, and the ball shot along the ground. Masht out bowled. Farook came out, and was swiftly removed by a beauty. 500 wickets for Paul Goodchild, Penn Street superstar.
After Goody was suitably mobbed, the PSCC tails were up. Jacko took a very smart caught and bowled to dismiss Ward. Weerakoon looked dangerous, but Nick Loftus removed him. George Michell caught Landon with a fine caught and bowled. Suddenly Holmer Green were rocking. Nick and George were the right combination for the pitch and were scything through the batting. Finally Dan Little came out and threw the bat but in vain. He tried to hit Jacko over the top and Nick took a good catch in the deep. A sweet victory for Penn St by 56 runs, and great bowling by all of Penn Street's bowling attack.
Man of the Match - Sam Martin - a vital 38 runs and a super catch.
Man of the Moment - Paul Goodchild - 17 seasons to accumulate 500 wickets, Good Stuff as the Legend himself might say...
