Penn Street vs Waxlow

Waxlow 243-6 (Praet 88, J. Sempill 2-38, R. Raven 2-515) beat Penn Street 228-8 (C. Herriott 92, S. Thompson 45) by 15 runs

After an eventful morning of pitch prep at PSCC, Waxlow arrived full of anticipation for yet another run fest on a fine batting strip. Waxlow won the toss and after much deliberation decided to bat (just for a change!).

Cherriott and Damo opened up with a tidy first couple of overs, but in true Waxlow style it didn’t take too long before the batsmen got the measure of the pitch.

Runs started to flow at a fair lick after the first wicket fell, partly because of some expansive stroke play and wayward bowling by The Street.

The skipper looked to the experience of Reece Raven and the youthful exuberance of James Sempill to stem the flow of runs. Reece’s figures of 2-51 didn’t do him justice with some vicious, late in-swing, but James 2-38 did a sterling job in tightening the screw and breaking a couple of key partnerships.

A special mention has to go to Micky Sanford who bowled at the death and managed the only maiden of the innings in the 39th over!

Waxlow finished on 243 for 6 off their allotted 40 overs, a big score but disappointingly a record 63 extras (50 in wides!) was a major contributing factor to this.

After another great tea in the Squirrel, The Street were prepared for some hard graft out in the middle. We started off with some fine stroke play from Stu Thompson, who at one time looked like he wanted to win the game by himself with some Gower - esque like drives to the boundary. He finally fell for 45 but laid a good foundation for the rest of the team to build on. Wickets started to fall at regular intervals until that man Micky came in to join Cherriott at the crease. Cherriott had been in for sometime and looked a bit out of touch but soon found his feet when he started to hit the bowlers to all parts of the ground, seemingly at will, taking 20 plus runs off consecutive overs. Cherriott eventually fell for 92 but put on a valuable stand of 70 with Micky of which his contribution was 0!

The street finally finished on 222-8 after a cameo at the death from Grant. Also a mention to Sam and Tyler Abear on there PSCC senior debut we hope to see you a lot more throughout the season.

A good game with some great opposition. Can’t wait for August when perhaps we can get our own back.
