Penn Street 46-10 (S. Briggs 16; Schumann 3-2) beaten by Winchmore Hill 52-1 (Banham 22; M. Bannister 1-16) by 9 wickets
It is fair to say that we were beaten by the better team on Sunday. Even if we had the strongest batting side we could field available, we would have struggled against a hostile and accurate Winchmore Hill attack.
Matt Bannister and Steve Exton opened. After 8 overs and only 6 runs on the board, Steve's patience finally snapped and he was bowled. Captain-for-the-day Matt was looking more comfortable, but the pace of Pierce was too much for him and he too was skittled out for a creditable 11.
This brought Rob "Heid the ba'"" Sutherland to the crease. He curbed his natural attacking instincts and dug in for a dogged 11 whilst wickets tumbled at the other end. Debutants Richard Spooner and Steve Smith went cheaply. However batting performance of the day was certainly that of Simon Briggs, who swung and hit at everything in sight, nearly putting the ball through his own bedroom window. His 16 runs, his personal best for the club, was the only bright spot of the day. All out for 46.
Nick Loftus and Chris Fletcher bowled well, but there were never enough runs on the board. After 12 overs the target was eclipsed, and, yes, we lost the beer match which followed as well.
PS due to the eccentricities of the website, those whose names are not yet on the website will appear as "Cally Sutherland" below. For a small payment, I can do this for all the quack-quack-oops on Sunday
