about Squirrels

Penn Street CC's Junior section provides coaching and matches for young cricketers of all abilities from the age of five. We provide a safe and supportive environment for all our juniors to learn and develop their cricketing skills.

Our main aim is for our Junior players (Squirrels) to have fun playing cricket and to play to the best of their ability, but we also wish to nurture an understanding and a love for the game of cricket where our Junior players play cricket fairly and with respect for their team mates, the opposition and officials.

Training sessions

Training is held on the Common in Penn Street (opposite the Squirrel pub) on Wednesday evenings between 6.15pm – 7.30pm. We normally start the week after Easter and run for 12 weeks up until school summer holidays, with a one week break during half term.

Juniors are split into 2-3 groups, with each group being run by a minimum of 2 coaches (normally 1 coach to 5 Juniors). For our youngest members, we run sessions that provide a great introduction to cricket and a fun environment to begin learning the skills of batting, bowling and fielding.

As the children progress, we look to develop their skills and confidence. They also have the opportunity to use our training net and bowling machine, and at the appropriate time move up to hard ball cricket.

Junior training sessions are organised and supervised by coaches who are DBS checked and ECB qualified.

Penn Street does not run winter nets, however, some of the local clubs we work with do provide opportunities and we can share details upon request.

Junior Matches

Penn Street Juniors play friendly matches vs. local clubs as well as a number of soft ball tournaments throughout the season. We aim to give as many Juniors as possible the experience of playing competitive cricket.

Great Volunteers

All our coaches are volunteers who are usually parents of junior cricketers or play for the senior team. We are always keen to involve anyone who are interested in helping and improving our junior section. An advanced level of cricketing knowledge is not required to make a difference and there are many supporting roles available, from assisting coaches at training sessions to helping at matches.

We regularly look to secure places on training courses run by the ECB for those volunteers committed to helping Penn Street CC and who wish to learn more about coaching, umpiring or scoring.

Family Club

Our juniors are an essential part of our club, and many of our juniors are the kids of our senior players. The whole family is welcome to get involved with Penn Street in a playing or non-playing capacity, whether that is being invited to our social and fundraising events, our annual awards, Boxing Day cricket or special events such as trips to Lords.
